This young lady is the wife of a JAG offi cer. She is practicing in dim light and can take care of the situation if need be.
A few words on burglars, since they are the likely adversary in a night battle. Often they are someone familiar with the home. Many burglars are acquaintances of drug and alcohol-addicted family members. These rogue family members think much more of their pill popping and drinking friends than they do your life or that of your children.
When you are in the home and under cover of darkness, you can easily see into a lighted room while those in the light cannot see easily into darkness. I would not be shy about illumination if the identity of the threat is in question. For this reason I keep a pair of SureFire lights near the bedside. If the threat turns out to be a spouse or roommate, you will be glad for the illumination. The utmost discipline is required not to tangle your fingers and press the trigger when holding both the gun and the light. A handgun light switch and handgun trigger may be confused if you have a weapon mounted light. Remember, the first few minutes you are awake after rising from a deep sleep are not your prime thinking moments. The illuminated person may be a threat but he may not have offered an attack at this point. If he is warned and refuses to leave your residence or advances on your position, you have little choice but to defend yourself.
A different proposition is presented if you have children or elderly dependents in the home. In this case you have to have some idea of how to clear the area. (We must assume that you think enough of your children not to simply run into the yard and cry for help. I am aware of a number of cases in which parents have escaped the home and left children to fend with burglars. ) When moving in a search you wish to keep as low a profile as possible. Keep one shoulder against the wall or nearly so.
Practice is required to avoid producing a scraping sound as you move in this manner, but you wish to remain close to the wall. If you are close to the wall you are not likely to be bowled over if the burglar takes a run at you and you are less likely to trip and fall. Always be alert to scraping noises and remember the adversary will be in the dark as well but you are familiar with the layout of the home.
